Sebasteia

Sebasteia
   City in Cappadocia (q.v.) whose location on a major road across Asia Minor (q.v.) explains why the Persians (q.v.) burned it in 575, and why the Arabs (q.v.) repeatedly attacked it. In 1021 it was ceded to King Senacherim Arcruni in return for Vaspurakan (q.v.). In 1059 it became the first important city in Asia Minor to be plundered by Turks (q.v.), who occupied it permanently toward the end of the 11th century. Legendary martyrs include the Five Martyrs of Sebasteia and the 40 Martyrs of Sebasteia (qq.v.).
